Hooters Tour event 2 March 11, 2010
Thursday, March 11, 2010

This is my first blog in a long time! Sorry! I began my season a couple of weeks ago in Savannah, Ga. I finished T53 and played in some of the worst weather I've ever played in. Last week I played in Ocala, FL in a Hooter's Tour event. I didn't play well and missed the cut. This week I'm playing in Amelia Island, FL which is just outside of Jacksonville, FL. I feel like I'm playing well even though my scores haven't reflected it so far this year. I need to make more putts and I'll have a chance at winning. In professional golf, putting is the key. Good scores and good putting go hand in hand. I've had a good week so far with practice rounds on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. After my practice round on Tuesday my roommate and me went down to Orlando, FL to the Rife Putter studio and got fitted for putters. Rife has a special type of putter with grooves on the face that help the ball to roll better than all the other putters on the market. It's very interesting to watch what happens in slow motion when you putt a ball with a normal putter. The ball actually has backspin at first and skips for a little bit then begins rolling. A Rife Putter has no backspin and begins rolling almost immediately off the face. After leaving the Rife studio my buddy and me were driving down the interstate when he informed me the gas pedal wasn't working anymore. Then he says, "I think we're running out of gas." I said, "You have got to be kidding me!" Luckily he made it to an exit ramp where I got out of the car and pushed it 300 yards to the end of the exit ramp where we were across from a gas station. He went over to the gas station and got a gas can and a gallon of gas, put it in the tank and we drove to the station to fill up. Needless to say, this Tuesday was an interesting day! I begin play today at 12:36, weather permitting. I'm excited about the week and I'm looking forward to a strong finish. Talk soon!

11/11/08 2nd Stage of Q-School
Tuesday, November 11, 2008

This week I'm in Panama City, FL at 2nd stage of Q-School. Second stage for me is at the Hombre, which is one of my favorite courses! The Hombre is a very tough golf course that puts a huge emphasis on driving it straight off the tee and being patient. This course really tests you mentally. I've played 2nd stage here the last 2 years, and I got through in 2007. Last year, I ended up missing going to third stage by one shot. The hombre was not nice to me last year, but I feel that it is a course that rewards good play. If you shoot a good score on this course then you deserved it and did not fake your way around it. I'm not sure what to expect this year with the scores compared to the last couple of years, since the greens seem to be a little softer and slower. However, this is the Hombre, and it always seems to play much tougher in the tournament than in the practice rounds. The weather in the practice rounds always seems to be good then when it comes tournament time, the wind kicks up, and the course plays tough! I'm excited about how I've been playing lately and feel like I'm playing well enough to get to third stage, and play well. Talk soon!

11/02/08 Q-School
Sunday, November 2, 2008

Miami turned out to be a tough week for us all! The course was not in the best shape since they have had so much rain this year and with brand new greens that doesn't help either! To make conditions tougher, mother nature did her part by sending us 30 mph winds! I played well the first round and shot even in tough conditions. The second round, I kept missing the fairways by a couple feet and with the rough as tall as it was, I was not able to hit a lot of greens. I felt I played better than my score showed. Also, the wind blew for both of my rounds. The players who had afternoon tee times on Thursday and morning tee times on Friday had the tougher draw because the wind never laid down. I was unfortunatly in that wave. Sometimes your on the good end of the draw, and other times you're not. It all evens out over time! Friday afternoon the wind was basically non-existent, and scores reflected that. I felt Miami would be a good tune-up for first stage of Q-School the next week at Martin Downs Country Club in Palm City, FL.

First stage of Q-School as always is a stressful week. You can win every tournament all year on a mini-tour and have a great season and if you don't advance through 1st and 2nd stage of q-school you feel as if the year wasn't a complete success and vice-versa. Last year I played 1st stage at Martin Downs and liked the course, so I chose to go there again this year. One of my best friends, Gary Hines, dad and step-mom live about 45 minutes from the course, so I stay with them when I go down there which is nice. Staying in hotels every week gets old, so when you can stay at a good home with people you enjoy being around, the week seems to pass along quicker. Also, I had a great caddie in my wife Emily. She did a great job overall. I was impressed she made it through all four rounds since she was carrying a bag that was almost as big as she is. One funny thing she did was on my second hole of the tournament, number 11, we had a little back up since it is a tough par 3. The hole was playing 180 yards into a cold wind and all over water. Emily and me were standing on the tee box waiting for the group in front of us to clear the green and she looked over at me and said, "Look at all that water!" I told her to never say negative things like that again on the course and she never did. I managed to make par, avoiding the water all four days, but I got a laugh out of her comment. I played well all week except for my 15th and 16th holes the third round. I hit a drive out of bounds on 15 and then 4-putted 16. I only missed about 6 fairways for the week and one of them was out of bounds, and I can't remember the last time I had a 4-putt, especially from 15 feet. I began the final round T-21 and the top 24 and ties advance to 2nd stage. I played solid the last round having 3 birdies and 15 pars. I finished T-14 and will find out where I get assigned for 2nd stage on Tuesday. I'm praying I get the Hombre in Panama City, FL since I've played there many times and it's close to home. I'll talk with you soon!

10/21/08 Miami, FL
Tuesday, October 21, 2008

This week I'm in Miami, Florida playing in a Nationwide event. I played a couple weeks ago in a Tarheel event in North Carolina and finished T30th. I didn't make enough putts which was disppointing, considering I felt like I was hitting the ball well. I took last week off to get ready for this week's event and next weeks event (1st stage of Q-School in Stuart, FL). I got a sponsor exemption into this week's event, which I'm very grateful for! Sponsor exemptions are hard to come by, especially this late in the year, so I feel very fortunate to get this one! The course this week is wet with all the rain Miami has had this summer. The greens are only 11 weeks old and are pretty good and very firm. The rough is pretty tough which will make hitting fairways a must. This is a great layout, and there is no faking your way around this course. I'm looking forward to this week in Miami. I always enjoy being in Florida, especially this time of the year when it's beginning to cool down back home! Talk soon!

10/03/08 Columbia, S.C.
Friday, October 3, 2008

I was in Columbia, South Carolina earlier this week in a Tarheel Tour event. Overall, I played o.k. I didn't do anything great which led to mediocre scores and a tie for 30th. The course was Columbia Country Club, which is over 100 years old!! I found the course to be in great shape and all the trouble was on the greens! The greens were rolling about a 12, which is really fast for bermuda greens. I didn't hit the ball as good as I would have liked for the week but my feel on the greens was great. I only had one 3-putt for the tournament and on those greens that is great, especially if you are averaging about 30 feet per birdie putt. I had some great 2 putts! It's very rare when I'll say I'm satisfied with one three putt in a tournament, but these greens weren't normal.

I have 2 tournaments left before first stage of q-school. I will be going to Stuart, FL for first stage at Martin Downs Golf Club. I played there last year and got through to second stage. I'll spend the next 3 weeks tuning my game up and getting ready for first stage. I'll be spending a lot of time on my putting and iron play to get ready. I can't believe the golf season is coming to a close. While I feel I haven't had a great year so far, making it all the way through q-school will turn this year into a success! Talk soon!

9/26/08 Charlotte, N.C.
Saturday, September 27, 2008

I just finished playing in a Tarheel Tour event in Charlotte, N.C. We played the first two rounds and then a tropical depression off the North Carolina coast cancelled day 3. This was the third tournament in a row that I've played in that has been shortened due to rain! I think this is a first for me! After taking a month off from competition, I was a little rusty this last event. I finished T-35, which wasn't what I was hoping for, but I played much better from the first day to the second. I shot one over par 73's both rounds. The wind blew about 25 mph both days which made the scores higher than normal. I played good enough the second round to shoot one of the few under par rounds of the day but, I made 2 bad swings, and the wind caught the ball and ended up costing me 4 shots.

Next week I'll be in Columbia, S.C. playing in another Tarheel event. I'm looking forward to a great week!
